Insomnia is something very common these days. People are getting used to it. But, did you know that there are many things that you should avoid eating before you go to bed because they can help you fall asleep easily and sleep more deeply? Try to avoid drinking alcohol, for example. It is full of MSG or high levels of glucose which stimulates the brain.
Here are some foods you should avoid before going to bed:
Alcohol
You may think that several drinks can relax you, but this is not true.
Alcohol affects our body in 2 ways:
It really relaxes us and we start thinking that we want to go to bed, but as it becomes digested, it stimulates our brain and we can’t rest at all!
Tomatoes
Even tomato-based soups and tomato sauces are included here.
Tomatoes are heavy for our digestive system. They can also cause the appearance of acid reflux. The stomach acid goes in the wrong direction e.g. back in our esophagus and the sensation it causes is similar to burning.
If you eat tomatoes before you go to bed, you’ll feel great discomfort as well as have insomnia.
MSG
Monosodium glutamate is something that is mostly used as an additive in Chinese food restaurants. It can also be found in many processed foods.
If we consume it before we go to bed, it will stimulate our brain and cause insomnia.
Sugar
Sugar causes insomnia and we become more active than normal since our brain is more active than normal.
Spicy food
Hot or spicy food before going to sleep can disturb you since it will cause the appearance of acid reflux.
It also has a stimulating effect over your brain.
Chocolate
Coffee causes insomnia, but did you know that chocolate can cause it, too?
Chocolate isn’t full of caffeine as coffee, but it still contains some and it is also abundant in sugar which will make you feel restless.
High-glycemic carbohydrates
These carbohydrates are actually starchy vegetables like squash, bread, noodles, potatoes, pizza crust, etc. They contain sugar, so they will disturb your sleep and you won’t sleep well.
So what should you eat before bed?
Eating vegetables is an amazing option. They are full of healthy fats, protein as well as grains!
